Auto Bloggers Unite for American Makes

1 March 2007

We all know that American car manufacturers are struggling. We also know that the cars produced by the American makers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) have improved.

I remember when I was a kid my aunt would always buy Ford cars, and we made fun of her for it! They were ugly, and always in the shop. But today’s Fords are more reliable and attractive. The same is true for GM and Chrysler models. It isn’t a shame to be seen in them any longer, they don’t cause you as many problems, and they come (especially GM vehicles) with great warranties.

The time has come for a shift in perspective. These auto manufacturers continue to struggle because of the continuing belief that they are inferior — which is an outdated view. So, how about us auto bloggers help change things? Let’s push to show just how much these companies have improved their products. Let’s show off the styling. If we can change this perception just a bit, maybe we can help turn sales around.

Whaddya’ say? Who’s with me?

Your car’s MPG sticker rating may not be correct.

25 February 2007

The government has reevaluated, and changed, the expected miles-per-gallon rating for cars to better reflect how we drive today.

Since the ratings original inception, we drive faster and with more start and stops. This means we get fewer miles out of the gas we buy. Even the efficient hybrids have been reduced quite a bit by this re-working.
To check your car’s new MPG rating go to fueleconomy.gov.

Saturn to sell Opel Astras in the states.

17 February 2007

The times they are a changin’.

Who would have thought that the automotive industry would be where it is today. Toyota and Honda taking over the market, and building cars in the states, all while our own national automakers struggle just to survive. Another sign of the changing times is GM will be importing Opel Astras to sell as Saturns. With sales of small cars increasing due to the climbing gas prices, GM hopes the deal will increase Saturn sales.

Reserve your Smart car.

13 February 2007

There’s definitely a buzz about the Smart cars coming to the states, hell, I’m pretty psyched for the little things. To help get some real figures on how this buzz is going to translate to sales, Smart is taking reservations for their vehicles. For $99 the company will put your name on a list that they will be sending to the dealers.

It all seems a bit odd, however, since it doesn’t really hold a car for you. The good news (beyond the Smart’s coming to America) is that this fee is refundable if you decide not to purchase, or can be applied to the cost of your vehicle if you do.

BMW and Cooper tie the knot.

13 February 2007

It’s all official. After using the Cooper brand for the BMW Mini, BMW has official purchased the rights to the Cooper brand name.

No telling what this will lead to, but the Mini has been quite a success for BMW. Could we see other Coopers by BMW, or is this a business move where BMW would rather own the name than rent?

Ford hemorrhaging money.

26 January 2007

Ford Motor Company recently announced a 12.7 billion (yes, with a “b”) loss in 2006. A giant number by any means.

The good news is there’s no doubting that Ford products have improved, which certainly bodes well. If the historic automotive company turns this around it will have to be through convincing the public that their vehicles are reliable, and showing a new styling that we wouldn’t be ashamed of being seen in — two things which have begun.

The Edge and Fusion herald a new era for Ford. Affordable and stylish, and the Fusion sporting all-wheel-drive, make turning the company around to profitability seemingly simple. Competitors, though, never stand idly by.

2007 brings a push by Audi to sell more cars in the states, the giant Honda and Toyota still going strong, Kia bringing in 2 new designers and improving quality…so, it won’t be easy.

While things are looking up for home-grown cars, the competition is still stiff. We’ll be routing for Ford.
