Hyundai’s ThinkAboutIt.com Crashes Dog’s Firefox, Gets Mad

9 October 2007

Hyundai’s browser/processor intensive ThinkAboutIt.com “micro”site crashed a dog’s Firefox browser, sending him on a kitty rampage.

mad.jpg

While trying to research the Hyundai Elantra, Alfred’s attention was grabbed by the Hyundai website’s Flash teaser for the company’s “Think About It” campaign, so he clicked to see what it was all about.

“I really just wanted to be told what to think,” Alfred stated in shame, “but when Firefox crashed I didn’t know where to turn for my thoughts. What was I to think?” In an unfortunate reaction of anger and thoughtlessness, Alfred, a mutt, turned on Peppers, his family’s new kitten.

“I hadn’t been trained on the kitty litter yet, so the outcome of Alfred’s attack wasn’t so disappointing to me,” Peppers admitted.

Alfred knows as much now about the Elantra as he did when he first visited HyundaiUSA.com, “It’s got the most room for a sedan in its class, and gets good mileage,” but his ears lose their perk from there, “Beyond that I have no idea what to think now.”

Let’s hope this matter gets cleared up soon so that we can be told to think about it in the future.

Top 10 Reasons To Buy An American Car

17 August 2007

It appears that some people still need a little convincing that they should consider purchasing an American-made car for their next vehicle, so I’ve put together this list of the top ten reasons to buy an American car.

10. Fewer Wall Street suicides.

9. It’ll make Michael Bay feel like his career wasn’t a total waste.

8. If Flint, Michigan, turns around then Michael Moore has less to worry about.

7. The new Ford Taurus is a Ford Taurus in name only.

6. Since cars made in the United States don’t have to be shipped from overseas, you’re helping reduce emissions from the transportation of new vehicles to the sales floor.

5. Lindsey Lohan’s a crackwhore, fo’ rizzle!

4. Because maybe then your neighbor who makes them could afford to buy what you sell.

3. Suzuki commercials suck.

2. Tougher for George W. Bush to label you a terrorist.

1. Our economy sucks, not our cars.

Got A Sweet Ride? Win A Tee!

5 May 2007

The guys at ImportTuner, who were kind enough to sponsor this, are looking for folks to submit pictures and descriptions of their rides for their May, Ride of the Month, contest. If you win, you’re modded, tweaked and tuned vehicular object will be highlighted in an article, and you’ll get a pretty cool Import Tuner t-shirt that you can wear while you sport around town showing it off…which I know you do, admit it, it’s ok. Nobody takes that many trips to the grocery.

I see plenty of rust-buckets with new rims and spoilers, hell, I’ve even seen (yes, it’s true) a decades old Plymouth, maroon, van with shiny-ass rims, flame stickers along the side, and an industrial spoiler. Let’s not send in those pictures, eh? I’ll be returning to ImportTuner.com and I want to see some really cool rides! Those cars you rarely see, where you know the owner loves it like a child. Pampered and fresh, but from the sound you know it’s got a cheetah under the hood! And remember, if it has stickers, it better back them up.

While we at CarKing like getting pics in too, we don’t have t-shirts (sad face). So if you need a new tee, you’ll get one over there. Not here. There.

Get The Cheapest Gas Prices From Automotive.com

21 April 2007

Automotive.com, who’s sponsored this, has set up a pretty cool new feature that allows you to find the cheapest gas prices in your area. I don’t know how exactly the data is collected, but I imagine the detail regarding local gas taxes wasn’t too hard to get. You put in your zip code and the widget (which you can place on your website, if you’re so inclined) outputs the average cost of a gallon of gas for your area.

From there, well, just find a station where you can get it cheaper and you’ve found a deal. In examining the stations in my area, and testing the tool, it seems pretty accurate. It stated a gallon of gasoline is 2.87 where I live, and there are plenty of stations that hover around that mark. The gas station I frequent is almost 10 cents lower, but I’ve known that the gasoline there is more affordable for a while now (hence why I frequent it….they also have good deals on fountain soda so I fill up two tanks while I’m there).

With the price of gas getting so high, every cent you save helps. I’d recommend this tool as a guideline. There’s certainly no reason to buy gas somewhere where you are going to be paying more than the average. Unless their deal on fountain soda is down-right obnoxious.

Auto Bloggers Unite for American Makes

1 March 2007

We all know that American car manufacturers are struggling. We also know that the cars produced by the American makers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) have improved.

I remember when I was a kid my aunt would always buy Ford cars, and we made fun of her for it! They were ugly, and always in the shop. But today’s Fords are more reliable and attractive. The same is true for GM and Chrysler models. It isn’t a shame to be seen in them any longer, they don’t cause you as many problems, and they come (especially GM vehicles) with great warranties.

The time has come for a shift in perspective. These auto manufacturers continue to struggle because of the continuing belief that they are inferior — which is an outdated view. So, how about us auto bloggers help change things? Let’s push to show just how much these companies have improved their products. Let’s show off the styling. If we can change this perception just a bit, maybe we can help turn sales around.

Whaddya’ say? Who’s with me?

Ford hemorrhaging money.

26 January 2007

Ford Motor Company recently announced a 12.7 billion (yes, with a “b”) loss in 2006. A giant number by any means.

The good news is there’s no doubting that Ford products have improved, which certainly bodes well. If the historic automotive company turns this around it will have to be through convincing the public that their vehicles are reliable, and showing a new styling that we wouldn’t be ashamed of being seen in — two things which have begun.

The Edge and Fusion herald a new era for Ford. Affordable and stylish, and the Fusion sporting all-wheel-drive, make turning the company around to profitability seemingly simple. Competitors, though, never stand idly by.

2007 brings a push by Audi to sell more cars in the states, the giant Honda and Toyota still going strong, Kia bringing in 2 new designers and improving quality…so, it won’t be easy.

While things are looking up for home-grown cars, the competition is still stiff. We’ll be routing for Ford.

The big car trend going small.

1 July 2006

The big car trend seems to be getting small, that is, the massive SUVs introduced in the 90s, and swallowed up by Americans, may be taking a back-seat to smaller, more affordable and more environmentally friendly, automobiles.

Don’t believe it? I don’t blame you. SUVs are everywhere, and it seems every other commercial totes the offroad capabilities of vehicles that will spend their lives “onroad”. So where does my statement come from? Well, $3.00 for a gallon of gas has people talking, and to understand the trends we need only look at the people who listen. That is, examine the offerings of today’s car manufacturers. More than ever, automobile companies are listening to the public’s wants, and creating vehicles to appease them. That’s just smart business.

And what are the manufacturers hearing. Well, if it’s any indication, more and more affordable, and smaller, vehicles are being introduced that get much better gas milage than the large SUVs.

Want proof? Honda will release the Fit, a 5-door version running $13,850, next year. Toyota’s now got the Yaris, various styles are available, the lowest base price being $10,950.

The Americans are on board too. Dodge has the new Caliber that starts at $13,985.

“But car makers have always had the smaller more affordable vehicles to offer” you say. True, no doubt.

But think about this, the absolutely tiny SmartCar (by DaimlerChrysler) will be introduced to the U.S. market in 2008. This vehicle is about 9 feet long, and gets almost 70 miles to the gallon (average of 40mpg overall). It will sell for under $15,000, and will be a version of its “fortwo” model.

Still not convinced? How about, Dodge can’t make their new Calibers fast enough to keep up with sales?

The truth is, smaller cars are already the new trend. Car makers have adjusted for our desire for more options in affordable, efficient, vehicles. And it’s a trend that will be beneficial to our wallets and planet.
